GENERAL LOGISTICS QUESTIONS

How far in advance do you book?

I am generally booked 2 weeks in advance, depending on your time zone. For clients who require a specific time and commit to regular attendance, I will reserve your spot in advance of my online schedule opening. Please email me directly if you cannot find a suitable time or require an urgent session, and I will alert you of alternative options or if any cancellations change my availability.

Do you offer specific payment plans?

Payment is typically due at the time of the session. In some cases, arrangements can be made for current clients who are facing unexpected financial circumstances. Sliding scale appointments are generally reserved for refugees/globally displaced people and international humanitarian workers without access to appropriate mental health services.

What time zones do you work in?

Since I am location independent, my working hours shift with my time zone and travel schedule, but I ensure that I have availability for wherever you are. I am currently based in Cape Town, South Africa for most of the year and my global availability is:

  • Asia - Afternoons and Evenings
  • Europe and Africa - Mornings and Afternoons
  • The Americas (North, Central, South) - Mornings
  • Pacific (including Australia and NZ) - Early mornings or late evenings on a case-by-case basis
  • Antarctica - Can’t wait to have a session from here one day, want to be my first?

THERAPY & COACHING

What is the difference between therapy and coaching?

Therapy is a medical service that may be covered by insurance and governed by specific regulations and requirements depending on the location of the client and therapist. For instance, a medical record is maintained for therapy clients, and a diagnosis may be required for reimbursement.

Coaching services are intended for healthy, well-functioning individuals, couples, and families who want to take action towards their goals for life, well-being, relationships, happiness, health, or work. While this may overlap with positive psychology aspects of therapy, the focus is not on symptoms/pathology, and coaching clients will not be assessed for diagnosis. I will not knowingly offer coaching services to any person experiencing acute instability due to substance abuse, suicidality, or violence, as the modality of coaching is not appropriate in these cases.

While not typically covered by insurance, coaching can be a helpful alternative for international clients. Your coaching sessions are designed to help you learn new skills, strategies, and tools to make significant, healthy, and sustainable behavior changes. So, if you are unable to find a therapist to help with this who is licensed across state or national borders where you or your family members reside, relationship coaching could be the ideal fit!

What types of therapies do you offer?

My approach is eclectic and humanistic. I may incorporate different therapies to meet the client where they are and do not focus on any one approach. I have a strong background in CBT and integrate narrative practice, ACT, somatic approaches, and liberation psychology. Self-compassion, identity, belonging, and healing from intergenerational trauma are core themes of my style.

In the Discovery Consultation, I'd love to hear about what you are looking for and propose a tailored approach. If there is a specific therapeutic approach that you are looking for, I can answer here to what extent I have experience with that method. Looking forward to hearing from you.

What type of coaching do you offer?

I provide one-on-one life transition coaching and relationship coaching services focused on the topics/goals jointly identified by us, the Coach and Client(s). Coaching sessions are for those seeking personal growth, awareness, and behavior change.

Life transitions may include geographic relocation, career pivots, or changing roles in any area of life. Relationship coaching is intended for romantic partners or adult families seeking to transform “sticky” dynamics by identifying patterns and upskilling your interpersonal game such that you can set boundaries and connect authentically with the people you love.

Your coaching sessions are designed to help you learn new skills, strategies, and tools in order to make significant, healthy, and sustainable behavior changes. I will assist you by listening and offering nonjudgmental feedback, thinking through decisions, and asking powerful questions to gain clarity. I will support you by offering accountability, affirmation, and an action plan.

Again, I will not knowingly offer coaching services to any person experiencing acute instability due to substance abuse, suicidality, or violence, as the modality of coaching is not appropriate in these cases. Similarly, it may not be possible for me to engage emergency services when providing services remotely. Because of these limitations, if I determine that coaching services are no longer appropriate for you and/or your situation and circumstances, I may refer you to another provider who is able to provide in-person mental health services or make recommendations so you can receive appropriate care. Monitoring appropriateness for coaching will be ongoing and I reserve the right to make this evaluation.

How does therapy work with my insurance?

For in-network insurance clients, I will provide a link to enter your insurance information into a billing platform that will verify your benefits and estimate the copay due per session.

Note that there are some restrictions involved with in-network insurance, depending on the plan that we will discuss during the Discovery Consultation.

In addition, I screen for whether couple or family sessions would be appropriate on a case-by-case basis, given insurance’s requirement for an identified patient, and there may be an additional fee (on top of the copay) for extending the length of the session to a full 60-minute session. You will be required to pay the remaining amount that insurance does not cover.

Do you accept out-of-network (OON) clients? What does the process look like?

The vast majority of my expat and digital nomad clients are reimbursed (fully or partially) by their international insurance plans. Here are some tips on checking your out-of-network benefits:

You may find answers to insurance questions in your insurance Summary of Benefits or your insurance company’s website. I recommend calling your insurance company to verify your benefits. You can usually find this phone number on the back of your insurance card. Here are some questions to ask when you call:

  • Do I have out-of-network (OON) outpatient mental health benefits?
  • If I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits, what percentage or dollar amount will I be reimbursed for psychotherapy?
  • Are licensed psychologists in Texas covered by out-of-network benefits?
  • Is online therapy (aka telehealth, telemental health, or teletherapy) covered by out-of-network benefits?
  • Do I have an annual deductible? If so, how much is it, and how much of my deductible has been met for this year?
  • If I have a deductible, will I need to pay out of pocket for OON psychotherapy until that deductible has been met? After the deductible has been met, what percentage or dollar amount will I be reimbursed for OON psychotherapy?
  • What documentation do I need to submit to receive out-of-network psychotherapy reimbursements?
  • Do I need a referral from an in-network provider to see an out-of-network provider?

If it’s helpful, you can provide the following CPT codes to your insurance company:

  • 90791 for the intake ($280 or $235 with Discovery Consultation credit)
  • 90837 for 55-minute psychotherapy sessions ($225)

If you are seen OON, you will be provided with monthly “superbills” with diagnosis codes and proof of payment to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. Please let me know if you have any questions.

What if I don’t have insurance—or prefer not to use it for mental health care?

If coaching services aren’t the right fit, I offer a $20 discount per session for Private Pay clients who are paying out of pocket.

Investing directly in your therapy actually comes with meaningful benefits, including:
✨ Freedom to choose your therapist—find the person who truly feels right for you
✨ Control over your care—you and your therapist decide the pace, style, and length of treatment, not a third party
✨ Protecting your privacy—your personal story and diagnosis stay confidential, not shared with insurance companies or subject to records requests
✨ Flexibility with online therapy—no session limits on telehealth vs in-person
✨ Continuity of care—stay with the therapist you trust, even if your insurance changes

Choosing Private Pay allows us to focus fully on you—your needs, your pace, your healing.

Do you have a sliding scale to make therapy more affordable?

Yes. I believe everyone deserves access to care. That’s why I offer a Wellness Equity Program, which is primarily reserved for refugees, globally displaced people, and international humanitarian workers who may not otherwise have access to mental health support.

Oftentimes, a relative, friend, or supportive community member assists with payment. The program includes creating a plan that fits the budget. This might include a personalized mix of counseling, coaching, or group wellness services—either with me or with trusted colleagues who collaborate in providing care.

If you think you may be eligible or know someone who is, please don’t hesitate to email me or schedule a Discovery Consultation. Together, we’ll explore what feels both supportive and sustainable for you.

Interested in donating to this program? A $300 (USD) gift provides 4-6 sessions of wellness services for someone in need of economic support and mental healthcare. They will receive a complimentary Discovery Consultation and a customized program to meet their unique needs. Click here to contribute.
